PANSA services:

PANSA increases safety and implements early warning system against air collision

  • Poland is the first country in Europe to implement the latest generation of safety system in Polish and European skies. Air Traffic Controllers begin its tests.
  • The iTec v3 system is a fully digital control of aircraft movements, incomparably more precise than previous systems.
  • iTec v3 will initially be deployed in Poznan and will eventually be used by the air navigation services of major European countries.
  • Thanks to the cooperation between the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency and the Spanish aviation systems manufacturer INDRA, Poland has become the European leader in implementing innovative changes in air traffic.

Digitalisation of the airspace allows faster and more accurate processing of data such as aircraft trajectories, which means that an air traffic controller is not only able to track its current position, but also see where it will be in a precisely defined period of time. An innovative aircraft interaction monitor, on the other hand, will alert earlier than the previously used Short Term Conflict Alert when a potential threat arises. A novel aircraft interaction monitor, on the other hand, will alert earlier than the previously used Short Term Conflict Alert (STCA) when there is a potential threat.

iTEC v3 is intended to replace the PEGASUS_21 system which has been in use in Poland for 12 years and covers only the airspace over Polish territory and areas of the Baltic Sea where, in accordance with international agreements, control is exercised by Poles. For more than a decade, the volume of air traffic, and thus air operations handled by controllers in Poland, has increased from 552,000 in 2009 to 912,000 in 2019*.

– We will implement the latest generation of iTEC as first in Europe and thus become a platform for further development of the system for other European countries. At the Air Traffic Management Centre in Poznan we will continue research and development work to improve the final version of the system – said Janusz Janiszewski, President of the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency.

A modern ATM system is the foundation for the implementation of the Single European Sky (SES). It responds to the recommendations of the European Commission in response to the rapidly growing air traffic in the airspace of the Old Continent. The aim of the EU institution was to increase the capacity of cross-border traffic and, at the same time, to increase safety standards through the rapid flow of information and the operation of virtual control centres which could carry out supervision over any part of the European airspace regardless of geographical location. Control through iTEC v3 also helps to ensure the punctuality and efficiency of flight operations, reduces emissions and cuts costs.

– This project represents a major technological step forward with the first iTEC OneSky implementation, and will place PANSA as one of the leading ANSPs in terms of the new Single European Sky strategy. – said Javier Ruano, Director of ATM Programmes of Indra.

Wielkopolska region will be the first point on the map of Poland where a new generation air traffic control system will be launched. iTEC v3 will be implemented at the Air Traffic Management Centre in Wysogotowo, close to Poznan-Ławica airport. The infrastructure for the system will be set up there and the Poznan centre will also act as a back-up for the Warsaw Air Traffic Management Centre, to be able to take over the handling of air traffic operations from other KRL regional centres if necessary.
